It's the Sony Open, the 2nd event on the PGA tour! Like last week this event will take place in Hawaii. Unlike last week this will be a cut event. Only the top 70 golfers move on to play Saturday and Sunday. This means it is very important to get all 5 (Draft) or 6 (DtaftKings) of your golfers through the cut. Otherwise you are missing out on 2 rounds of scoring.

Waiale is a Par 70 course that measures 7,044 yards. It's a short course with only 2 Par 5 holes on it. The weather is expected to be great which means I'm expecting a low scoring week.

For Draft the largest contest is a 5 person draft. Therefore my strategy is to identify who I believe to be the top 25 golfers in the field. I start off with Vegas Odds to win because I believe Vegas knows more than everyone else. From there I look to course history, followed by finishing place in the last 9 most recent PGA events. Finally, I look at strokes gained stats, birdie or better percentage and Par 4 scoring.

For Draft 50% of my entry fee budget will go to 5 person Drafts. I'll also play $2 in Dream Team. For the 5 person I will alternate between tournament and non tournament entries.

Here are the golfers I like for Draft separated by tier:

Tier 1
  • Justin Thomas
  • Jordan Spieth
  • Marc Leishman
  • Brain Harman
  • Kevin Kisner
Tier 2
  • Zach Johnson
  • Tony Finau
  • Russell Henley
  • Cameron Smith
  • Daniel Berger
Tier 3
  • Webb Simpson
  • Charles Howell
  • Gary Woodland
  • Jason Dufner
  • Jamie Lovemark
Tier 4
  • Chez Reavie
  • Xander Schauffele
  • Kyle Stanley
  • Si Woo Kim
  • Peter Uihlein
Tier 5
  • Ollie Schniederjans
  • Patton Kizzire
  • JJ Spaun
  • Bill Haas
  • Austin Cook
For Draftkings salary comes into play. So while I look at the same elements that I looked at for Draft, with the salary implications that creates a different player pool.

I'm making 8 lineups for GPP contests only so my lineups will be based on that. If you are playing more lineups you may need more golfers to target. If you are playing cash contests I will make a note as to which players in my pool are safe for cash.

My strategy is to build lineups with at least one golfer in the top tier that I believe can win. I'm also building one mid tier lineup where I fade the top tier completely. As a result I'm going to have light exposure to the top tier and heavier exposure to the lower tiers. However, most of my lineups will have at least one golfer in the top tier.

Heavy Exposure = 50% or more
Medium Exposure = 25% to 49%
Light Exposure = 24% or less

Top Tier Players - $10,100 and Above
  • Jordan Spieth - Medium Exposure (safe for cash)
  • Justin Thomas - Medium Exposure (safe for cash)
  • Marc Leishman - Medium Exposure (safe for cash)
  • Brian Harman - Medium Exposure

Mid Tier Players - $7,600 to $9,500
  • Gary Woodland - Heavy Exposure (safe for cash)
  • Tony Finau - Heavy Exposure (safe for cash)
  • Daniel Berger - Medium Exposure
  • Chez Reavie - Medium Exposure (safe for cash)
  • Russell Henley - Light Exposure
  • Peter Uihlein - Light Exposure
  • Austin Cook - Light Exposure
  • Scott Piercy - Light Exposure
  • Jamie Lovemark - Light Exposure
Value Tier Players - $7,500 and Below
  • Stewart Cink- Heavy Exposure
  • Kyle Stanley - Heavy Exposure
  • Jason Dufner - Medium Exposure (safe for cash)
  • Jason Kokrak - Medium Exposure
  • Aaron Wise - Light Exposure
  • Kevin Na - Light Exposure
  • Hudson Swafford - Light Exposure
